Quick Start

The typical Data Map Studio workflow, from connection to working table.

1. Connect a source

Open the Sources page and add a database connection. Data Map Studio connects to your own databases directly from the desktop app; connection details stay on your machine.

2. Browse tables with Direct Explore

Direct Explore lets you browse your own database tables before creating a Data Map. Open a table, review its columns and rows, and get a feel for the data before you decide what to map.

3. Build a Data Map

Open Data Map and add the tables you care about. Arrange them on the canvas, review suggested relationships, and draw the connections that reflect your schema. See Data Maps for details.

4. Inspect and compare tables

Double-click a node to inspect its columns. Select two nodes to compare them side by side, including relationship candidates between the two tables.

5. Save the map

Save the map so it appears in Saved Maps and can be reused later. The Free 9-node limit applies when saving a Data Map, not while browsing.

6. Create a working table

From a saved Data Map, save a query result as a working table. Working tables are reusable, refreshable local query outputs. See Working Tables.

7. Export or publish in Full

With Full, you can export data, export and re-import Data Map files, publish working tables to a local SQL endpoint, and use trust identity features when sharing maps. See Free vs Full.
